On Monday, August 30th’s Moon Griffon program, the conservative talk show host shared his thoughts on the 3rd Congressional District run-off race between Jeff Landry and Hunt Downer. Popular consensus in the area is in agreement with the statement made by Griffon, which is that Downer needs to step aside in this race and allow Landry to move on to the general election without having to expend any more personal or financial expense. The question is, will Hunt Downer, 30 year Democrat turned Republican, heed that call and do what is best for the Party, or with selfish ambition, continue in futility toward the run-off election.
Folks need to realize that a vote for Downer will end up being a vote for Obama. Downer has a record of voting for taxes and supporting gay rights agendas while serving within the Louisiana House of Representatives, was a chairman of Bill Clinton’s campaign for President here in Louisiana, was a Chief Lobbyist for the Blanco administration following her abysmal performance during Hurricane Katrina and has only been a Republican for approximately 10 years.
I don’t know what involvement in Landry’s campaign former GOP State Sen. Craig Romero is playing, but during he and Downer’s time in the legislature together, is was Craig Romero who voted for the most fee and tax increases between the two.
Jeff Landry served as Romero’s chief of staff.
I like Jeff, but I’d like to know what role his former pro-tax increase boss is playing.
I like both Landry and Downer - I know Downer from my Guard days - and I think either would be a good Representative. But with the GOP race this close, Downer should save his fight for another day. All the negativity so far is going to get played right back at whoever the GOP nominee is, and another round of a Landry/Downer slingfest will only make that worse. Potentially, the Third could stay blue because of it.
As a Tea Partier, I am greatly concerned by a very disturbing parallel I’m seeing in this race, and others - whoever Pat Bergeron is pushing or beating up on, the Tea Party of Louisiana seems to do the same; and Bergeron trumpets every TPoL press release as if TPoL speaks for the entire Tea Party Movement in Louisiana. Coincidence? Hmmm....

This really cracks me up. Those Tea Party types sure are unsavory radicals that should be dealt with cautiously, with their wacky ideas like fiscal conservatism and limited government.
Oh, but wait a second.... weren’t those the defining principles of what it meant to be a Republican before the party was hijacked by “neo-cons” and “culture warriors.” You know, the guys who brought the Republican party to its current minority status.
Or am I the only one who has a hard time distinguishing between a Repub from a Dem these days?
General Downer has been an outstanding public servant. Some of the things I’ve read about him recently are disgusting, and obviously were written by people who have never met the man.
I’m sure he’s a fine public servant and a good man.. He’s just not a conservative republican.
Y’know, Fred, half the people in the GOP were Democrats once, and some quite liberal. Should they be condemned because they didn’t see reason as early as you?…
I wish folks in the GOP would save their fire against The Left for, well, the actual Leftists and statists currently in power, not as a fratricidal exercise in campaigning. Wage this battle, and you give the Democrats the plan to win the war in the 3rd. Same holds true for Downer.

I don’t care what they were, just what they are now.. Enough damage has been done to the republican party by RINO’s without electing more.
Have you ever met General Downer? Or are you simply repeating what someone else told you?
The idea that General Downer is not conservative is absurd.
Look, I believe, due to the primary election results, Downer probably should drop out to save money and battle energy for the Democrat candidate.
HOWEVER, with all these accusations of calling Gen. Downer a RINO, it needs to be said that Jeff Landry was Chief of Staff for and understudy of a former GOP State Senator who voted for more tax increases and fee increases than Downer during their time serving together in the legislature.
Voting records prove that.
I’ve tried asking people what involvement former RINO State Sen. Romero has in Landry’s campaign and any future Congressional staff. I can’t seem to get an answer. If Downer’s a RINO because of his former associations with Gov. Blanco, then you have to apply the same standard to Jeff Landry.
Having said that, I’ve met Mr. Landry a couple times. I like him. I wrote a guest column for the newspaper back in ‘07 asking voters to elect him to State Senate over Troy Hebert. I think Landry is the man to beat in this race. However, I want everyone to be up front and honest, and it seems we’re not getting that from the Louisiana Tea Party’s lobbying for Landry campaign.
