Among the many reverberations of President Obama’s election, here is one he probably never anticipated: at least 32 African-Americans are running for Congress this year as Republicans, the biggest surge since Reconstruction, according to party officials.

But now black Republicans are running across the country — from a largely white swath of beach communities in Florida to the suburbs of Phoenix, where an African-American candidate has raised more money than all but two of his nine (white) Republican competitors in the primary.

Col. Allan West is a legit leader, and hopefully the voters in the Florida district will vote him into Congress.  He is the kind of conservative Republican the national GOP should be helping promote.

Too bad Washington and the Pentagon’s urge to fight a politically-correct war will help fuel attacks about Col. West’s character, but we have to hope voters are smart enough to see through such tactics.

The Republican Party needs REAL leaders in state and U.S. government.

Maybe African- Americans are realizing that the Democratic party has let them down.  It’s still treating them like second class citizens by pushing policies to “help” blacks get ahead, as if they couldn’t do it on their own merits.  It’s insulting.  This is great news ... and if these candidates are conservatives then best of luck to them!

I love that clip.  This man is everything the Republican party stands for...equal opportunity ( not outcome), family support, hard work, realizing the American dream for yourself and your family.  Hope he wins!

Or maybe they see People like Michael Steele and President Obama in leadership positions and they are inspired to give it a try themselves.

Perhaps they’re so disgusted by Michael Steele and obama, they decided to run.

Isn’t it just as insulting to suggest that black people havn’t been able to figure out for themselves which party best represents them?

Sometimes it’s hard to bite the hand that feeds you--even if it’s in your best interest.

You don’t think that having the first black president is inspirational to black people no matter their political persuasion?

When Obama won, I remember a quote from a black man who said that his mother had always told him he could do and be anything he wanted—even be the President of the United States-- but it didn’t ring true because there had never been a black president.  He said the now he can tell his son that same thing and BELIEVE it and his son can believe it.  Even if you don’t agree with him politically, you have to know that his election was very meaningful to blacks in this country.
