My record on exposing Vitter’s “sins” before they became public knowledge is impeccable. For example, I was one of the few bloggers talking about Vitter’s whoring years before he (sorta) admitted it. I was discussing Wendy Cortez back in 2004, when “respectable” journalists and bloggers derided folks like me as hateful rumormongers who spread lies with no evidence. It didn’t bother me much because I knew that truth was on my side. So I’ve already been through this routine many times. Until the truth comes to light, I understand that I’m going to take some heat. No, I don’t have an old diaper with Vitty’s DNA on it, and no, I’m not going to give up the names of the guys who saw him so you can interview them. They’re private citizens, have families, and exposing their past hanky panky isn’t for me to do.
Let’s review: In addition to his chronic whoring in the Crescent City (which is a crime, btw), Vitter also was an unindicted co-conspirator in an illegal prositution ring in D.C.. Worse, it appears that one of the D.C. call girls he did business was his indirect subordinate, as she was a staffer on one of his committees on Capitol Hill. In the halls of Congress he took time out between votes to make calls to prostitutes. He did these things, and then lied about it repeatedly to the citizens of Louisiana. He called his critics liars and thugs, and vindictively denied job opportunities to a journalist who was pursuing the story. He lied to journalists, and lied to a group of pastors who asked him about his “skeletons”. Then, after getting caught he didn’t come clean about the entirety of his misdeeds, and didn’t feel he owed a truthful explanation about the scope of his “sins” nor did he answer any questions about his chronic, illegal behavior. Instead of truly fessing up, he went on to make a cagey, misleading denial about the “New Orleans stories” that he claims are “not true”. Well, there’s plenty of “New Orleans stories” that are true. So, this issue isn’t merely about the facts of Vitter’s “personal life”, as you call it.
But in your mind, Avman, all of this deceitful immoral illegal and hypocritical behavior becomes much much worse with the additional detail that Vitty was known to get his rocks off in a dipey, back in the day. That’s what really damaged his rep in your view. Honestly, I don’t really care what two consenting adults need to do behind closed doors to make sex more exciting. However, for a pampered whoremonger like Vitter to use a diaper gag in one of his pro-family political ads… that was just disgustingly creepy. Beyond the pale. (And, just to reiterate, I wasn’t the first blogger to mention Vitty’s sexual fetishes.)
I agree that it’s pretty juvenile to keep harping on that detail rather than dwelling on all the substantive things that should count against Vitter’s lack of character and unfitness to hold office. But that probably says more about the folks who traffic in this forum, more than anything else. As for my “little world” at YRHT, I’m quite proud of the regular conservative commenters who join the discussion at my site. Owen Courreges, for example, is one of the clearest and most compelling conservative voices in the Louisiana blogosphere, and I’m glad he regularly contributes to the policy debates at YRHT. (Tip: Owen can make his case without mentioning Hitler at the drop of a hat.) I wish conservative commentary here was even half as good as Courreges’ is at YRHT.
Oh, and as for the intellectual integrity thing I mentioned earlier, your unwillingness to address the issue head on is all I need to know.
