Rush is upset that the Obama camp is portraying him as being a bigot…By quoting a bigoted statement he’s made.

If there’s one thing Republicans these days know, it’s irony.

In his WSJ piece Limbaugh doesn’t deny making the statements. His issue is that the statements are taken out of context.

Context?

What is it with bigots that makes them think there is a context for bigotry? When much was made of that paragon of virtue Bill Bennett’s assertion “if you wanted to reduce crime, you could—if that were your sole purpose—you could abort every black baby in this country,”

Bill and his supporters claimed that statement was taken out of context.

***

So when Limbaugh speaks of “stupid and unskilled Mexicans” and tells them to “shut your mouth, or get out” what’s missed by the chattering classes is that these are actually—according to Rush—“humorous monologue(s)” or “parody.”

Yeah. You know, the way Amos and Andy was penetrating social satire.

My problem with Rush is not that he’s a bigot. Bigots are actually funny to me in the way that people who still wear parachute pants give me a chuckle. What bothers me about Rush’s ilk is that they don’t actually have the stones to be real racists or women haters or anti- Semites. Though they irresponsibly fan the flames of hatred, they don’t own the strength of their convictions. When they are called on their stuff they run back to their bunker, which is heavily fortified for a reason, crying “but it was only a joke!”

Like when Rush joked that Obama was a “haf-rican,” or when he jested that Obama was a “magical negro.”

Oh, the hilarity.

Republicans seem to be whining a lot lately. Next thing you know , republicans will flip flop from saying the economy is great to whining about the bad economy.

The LA times called him “magic negro” first, and it’s a black guy on Rush’s show who sings the song for it.

And Obama is technically “multi-racial”.  We used to call it mulatto, but that’s not exactly kosher.  He’s being dishonest about his race, as dishonest as we have been throughout American history when we labeled ANYONE with 1/4 or more African ancestry as “black.” It’s absolutely ridiculous.  And...why shouldn’t illegal aliens shut their mouth and get out?

I heard the piece.. It was taken out of context.  The comments about illegals were actually quoting Mexican laws, on their books, concerning illegals in Mexico.

I read what Rush and the rightwing bloggosphere are saying about the piece.. and because they validate my warped worldview, I trust that they are telling the truth when they say it was taken out of context.  I have no idea what I am talking about when i repeat the lies I was told regarding [t]he comments in that they were actually quoting Mexican laws, on their books, concerning illegals in Mexico.

Fixed it for you, fred.

================

Let’s take a look at the “context” Rush claims these comments were taken out of.

As for the quotes, Limbaugh said they were taken out of context.

The first, “stupid and unqualified,” was from the NAFTA debate of the mid-90s, he recalled.  Limbaugh, a NAFTA proponent, said in the fall of 1993 he got a call from a listener who was upset at the potential loss of American jobs.

In response he said, “If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid people--I’m serious, let the unskilled jobs, let the kinds of jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do--let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work.”

Explaining his comments, Limbaugh writes: “I was referring to jobs in MEXICO. I was not discussing immigrants, illegal or otherwise.” Source

Nice explanation.  It really doesn’t provide any acceptable context though.

In fairness, Limbaugh was referring to Mexican laws when the “shut your mouth” comment was made, although that doesn’t really excuse (or provide any “context” that would make the comments appear not bigoted) the first, more damning comment about Mexicans.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

Put down the OxyContin and read the transcripts.  Nobody not a devotee could conclude the statements weren’t meant to disparage Mexican immigrants.  It’s ok though roux, there are still plenty out there who defy the facts and believe Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11.  I’m sure those fellas would welcome another factual skeptic into their midst, if you are not already one among them....

They were not. They were meant to disparage Amercan idiots.

You continue on the trail to stupidity even when it is pointed out you are wrong.

No, they weren’t.  And you haven’t pointed out anybody is wrong other than to say it is so, which is worthless.  But go ahead and keep believing what you want.  I’ll tell you what, give us a link to this alleged “context” that shows where it was directed at “American idiots” and then we can continue this conversation.

Trots, I don’t have to you linked it for me. Rush is perfectly able to explain his comments. I don’t need to defend him.

Maybe if you read what I linked from right to left, but the rest of us non-dittoheads read from left to right.
