Riding a late burst of support after spending months as an also-ran candidate, the conservative sought to convince undecided voters to back his come-from-nowhere movement in remarks at a coffee shop jammed with Iowans on a windy New Year’s Day.
“Lead this country. That’s what I ask the people of Iowa. Lead, don’t defer,” said Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator. “Don’t put forward somebody who isn’t good enough to do what is necessary to change this country.”
If Santorum is to pull off what only days ago seemed like an unlikely victory in Tuesday’s caucuses, it will be because he was successful in uniting behind him evangelical supporters who have been split all year between him and rivals Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry.

]]>NEW YORK: The increase in incomes of the top 1 percent of Americans from 2003 to 2005 exceeded the total income of the poorest 20 percent of Americans, data in a new report by the Congressional Budget Office show.
The poorest fifth of households had total income of $383.4 billion in 2005, while just the increase in income for the top 1 percent came to $524.8 billion, a figure 37 percent higher.
The total income of the top 1.1 million households was $1.8 trillion, or 18.1 percent of the total income of all Americans, up from 14.3 percent of all income in 2003. The total 2005 income of the 3 million individual Americans at the top was roughly equal to that of the bottom 166 million Americans, analysis of the report showed.
The report is the latest to document the growing concentration of income at the top, a trend that President George W. Bush said last January had been under way for more than 25 years.

]]>Under Georgia law, the Secretary of State had properly deferred the ballot challenges to the OSAH for the court’s opinion, and the determination of whether or not Obama’s name will appear on the Georgia ballot ultimately rests with the Secretary.
Regardless of the outcome in Georgia, it appears that Obama has openly shown his disregard for the laws of that state. According to Irion, Obama has also “decided that he is above the Courts, the law, and the Constitution. He has just indicated...that he is not subject to their authority. This is the true story from today, yet almost no one will report it.”

]]>Stocks on Wall Street declined sharply on Friday in the wake of a speech by President Obama on jobs that added to the uncertainty already weighing on financial markets over European sovereign debt and the weak economic recovery.
By midday, the Standard & Poor’s index of 500 stocks had fallen about 2.5 percent to 1,155.47. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 303.34 points, or 2.6 percent, to 10,992.47, and the Nasdaq composite index was down 2.27 percent to 2,471.97.
Most of the sectors in the broader market were down by 2 percent or more.
They followed indexes in Europe lower. By late afternoon, the FTSE 100 in Britain was down 2.4 percent. The Euro Stoxx 50 index was down 4 percent and the CAC 40 index in France was down 3.6 percent.

]]>President Obama offered a new line of reasoning for hiking taxes on the rich on Thursday, saying at the National Prayer Breakfast that his policy proposals are shaped by his religious beliefs.
Obama said that as a person who has been “extraordinarily blessed,” he is willing to give up some of the tax breaks he enjoys because doing so makes economic, and religious sense.
“For me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’s teaching that for unto whom much is given, much shall be required,” Obama said, quoting the Gospel of Luke.
Obama wants to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire for the richest Americans, and he has embraced the idea that wealthy Americans should not be paying a lower effective tax rate than those in the middle or lower classes.
